Abstract

COREu is the largest research and innovation project in the field of carbon capture and storage (CCS) funded by a European programme, aiming to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon future. The project targets a CO2 reduction of 6.8 Mt/year by 2035 and 36 Mt/year by 2050, achieved by demonstrating key technologies across the entire CCS value chain in Europe. COREu aims to develop new demonstration projects linking CO2 sources with potential storage sites. At its core, the project is based on the fundamental concept of CCS, which involves capturing waste carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere or from energy production or industrial plants, and subsequently transporting it to sites for utilization or storage in geological formations.

One significant challenge is the community's risk perception, where effective risk communication by private companies is crucial for the success of CCS projects. Another challenge is the potential impact of CCS adoption on workplaces and organizations. Analyzing job creation, workforce training, and corporate social responsibility can significantly enhance the social acceptance of CCS. Additionally, identifying relevant end users and societal stakeholders in the CCS value chain, including analyzing their concerns and needs, and providing guidelines to streamline social acceptance processes in relevant regions for cluster development are key objectives.

The University of Bologna, particularly the team of Work and Organizational Psychology from the Department of Psychology, holds an important role in this project. UNIBO will analyze the potential impacts of CCS adoption on workplaces and organizations. The team will examine how job creation, workforce training, and corporate social responsibility can be leveraged to enhance the social acceptance of CCS, ensuring a holistic approach to implementing CCS technologies effectively across Europe. To achieve this, the team will conduct a comprehensive stakeholder analysis to understand the concerns, interests and needs of all relevant parties involved in the CCS vale chain.
