Abstract

EdgeAI is a key initiative for the European digital transition towards intelligent processing solutions at the edge. EdgeAI aims to develop new electronic components and systems, processing architectures, connectivity, software, algorithms, and middleware. This will be achieved through the amalgamation of microelectronics, AI, embedded systems, and edge computing. EdgeAI is tasked with ensuring that Europe possesses the necessary tools, skills, and technologies to enable edge AI as a robust alternative to legacy centralized solutions. This will unlock the potential of ubiquitous AI deployment, with the ultimate objective of positioning Europe at the forefront of Intelligent Edge technology.

Contributing to the Green Deal's twin transition in the enterprises, EdgeAI will adopt a systemic, cross-sectoral approach. Furthermore, it will develop methodologies to simplify, advance, and tailor the design of edge AI technologies. This will be accomplished by coordinating efforts across 48 of the most reputable R&D organizations across Europe. EdgeAI will also showcase the applicability of the developed approaches across a range of vertical solutions, considering the security, trust, and energy efficiency demands inherent in each of these use cases.

Moreover, EdgeAI is set to significantly transform workplaces and organizations, enhancing their efficiency and decision-making capabilities through advanced AI processing at the edge, ultimately fostering a more productive, secure, and sustainable work environment. In understanding this transformation, the role of organizational and industrial psychology will be paramount, as it will provide valuable insights into how these new technologies impact human behavior, work dynamics, and overall organizational culture, thereby facilitating a smoother integration of EdgeAI solutions into diverse workplace environments.
