Abstract

SESTOSENSO was inspired by the expanding industrial requirement to link production line operators with robots, equipment, and site-specific factory information in accordance with Industry 4.0 (interconnected automation) and the upcoming Industry 5.0 concepts (humanization and re-use of resources). This demands the creation of robot systems that can run and interact securely with minimal out-of-the-robot infrastructure, thereby decreasing robot setup times and costs and so enhancing the flexibility of shopfloor design. Furthermore, SESTOSENSO is motivated by the need to adopt robots for medium-small production/service facilities, as well as for domestic applications, with limited infrastructure investment possibilities, and finally by the need to develop robot applications in poorly structured and rapidly changing environments or outdoors. Sestosenso's mission is to create self-standing robot systems with strong cognitive skills that can conduct operations involving items and/or humans in unstructured and dynamic situations without the requirement for specific external infrastructures.
